Introduction

Suits L.A is a legal drama TV series that is currently streaming on the platform Peacock. Suits L.A is a spinoff of the original show Suits which takes place in New York. The show expands off of its complementary show, however, Suits L.A is forming a path of its own by focusing on entertainment law rather than high-profile business deals. This show stands out to me because I am a big fan of the original suits show and spinoffs typically don't do as well as the original, so being able to critique this show will be a curious venture.

Describe

Suits LA (TV Series 2025- ) - Posters — The Movie Database (TMDB)In the first episode of the TV show Suits L.A, the firm in which the main character (Ted Black played by Stephen Amell) faces many conflicts as he and his business friend (Stuart Lane played by Josh Mcdermitt) plan to merge firms with another which is ran by Ted's ex. During this process, Stuart Lane deceives Ted into signing away the firm to him. While doing some more research I stumbled across a review that wasn't what I expected but gave some honest critique on the first episode of the new show. They posed the question, "Did I just watch a Suits LA finale on the first episode"? He goes on to describe how it felt like they forced one season into one episode. He finishes by sharing how he doesn't believe they can recover from this "disaster".

Analyze

Suits LA much like its predecessor Suits, exudes confidence, sharpness, and sophistication.

  • The tone is sleek and fast-paced
  • It is driven by power

This style is crafted to mirror the high-stakes environment of law, ego, and ambition. The city of Los Angeles, with its glitz and glamour, serves as the perfect backdrop for this legal drama. The characters navigate their way through complex cases, all while balancing personal ambitions and relationships. The show delves into the intricacies of the legal world, highlighting the tension between personal ethics and professional success.

In Suits LA, viewers are introduced to a new ensemble of characters, each bringing their own flair and expertise to the table. The dynamic between the seasoned partners and the ambitious associates creates a captivating narrative that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats. As alliances form and rivalries intensify, the stakes rise, showcasing the relentless pursuit of victory and justice in the city's bustling legal scene.

The series not only explores legal battles but also provides a glimpse into the lives of those who inhabit this high-pressure world. The personal stories of triumphs and challenges add depth and relatability, making it more than just a legal drama but a reflection on human ambition and resilience.

Interpret

In Suits LA the stereotype that is portrayed would be The Alpha Male Lawyer (e.g., Ted Black – portrayed by Stephen Amell) Ted embodies the typical "rugged professional" intelligent, authoritative, emotionally reserved, and consumed by his career. He is a character characterized by a quiet intensity, often reluctant to reveal any vulnerability. This aligns with the hyper-competent male stereotype frequently depicted in legal or political dramas.

  • Example:
    • Ted may be depicted working late into the night, tackling seemingly insurmountable legal challenges, and grappling with personal struggles in solitude—reinforcing the notion that masculinity equates to emotional restraint and dominance.

Evaluate

  1. Impressive Lead Performance

Stephen Amell's depiction of Ted Black infuses the screen with a charismatic and self-assured presence. His portrayal has been recognized for enriching the character, establishing him as a captivating lead in the series.

     2. Opportunities for Character Growth

The series features a diverse ensemble cast, including Erica Rollins (Lex Scott Davis) and Rick Dodson (Bryan Greenberg), providing ample opportunities for intricate character development and engaging interpersonal relationships.

Critiques of Suits LA

     1. Lack of Engaging Legal Drama
Reviewers have noted that the legal cases in Suits LA lack the intrigue and depth that captivated audiences in the original series. The emphasis on entertainment law and celebrity clients may not appeal to viewers looking for a more substantial legal narrative.

     2. Subpar Writing and Pacing Concerns

The dialogue and plot development have faced criticism for being predictable and missing the sharp humor of the original. Some reviews suggest that the writing feels uninspired, with pacing issues particularly noticeable in the early episodes.

Critics have shared varied perspectives on Suits: LA. The Guardian characterized it as a “glossy legal spinoff” that ultimately falls short, calling it “an unsexy disappointment” and highlighting its absence of the original series' charm and wit. Conversely, WhatToWatch.com recognized the show’s “flashy” allure and praised the strong performances of the ensemble cast, while also pointing out issues with pacing and a shortage of sharp dialogue.

Engage

I started watching this show when it first came out because I have always loved the show Suits. I have not been able to binge-watch it, however, there are only a few episodes and they are still coming out every week. Suits LA has been taking advantage of social media by posting things such as behind-the-scenes videos and character teasers. This approach to social media helps keep viewers interested and engaged with the show and what they have to offer.
