Hello my name is Colby Moritz and I am currently wrapping up my second year here at Linn-benton. I am studying business with the goals to one day run/own a business. I decided to attend college because I have a grant that will pay for 90 credits which is equivalent to an associates degree. I am currently engaged to be married to my beautiful fiancé Ava to which I had the great opportunity of proposing at a castle on a golf course in Ireland... Let's just say it was a very magical moment for us. Speaking of golf, In my spare time (which isn't much) I love to golf. I have been able to consistently go every Sunday morning before church and I hope to go more during the spring and summer when the weather decides to be nice. More than just golf, I am passionate about all things sports. I love the competitive spirit and I love breaking down plays to the fundamentals with the hope of learning how to do it. When it comes to this class I am interested in learning how to navigate through media and the "fake news" it presents.
My three main sources of information would include Instagram, Fox News, and KVAL (local news). These sources are my go-to because Instagram is easy to access and always up to date. It also has a lot of different perspectives and opinions as well as some fact-checking that can be verified. Fox News is something I grew up watching with my parents so I guess I use it because of old habit and routine. KVAL is the same as Fox News in that my grandpa watches it every day when he gets home. I also watch it because it's the best way to get my local news. I honestly don't consider Instagram and Fox News to be entirely reliable because there are too many biases with them. To be fair there are biases in lot's of news sources but they are obvious. KVAL seems to be more objective in their news and findings and that might be because they aren't usually pushing some political objective.
When it comes to "fake news" and misinformation I believe it is nearly impossible to avoid. It is everywhere and people just aren't hiding it anymore. I can say with confidence that you will find some sort of bias in the media which will cause people to say things that either are blatant lies or aren't the full truth. For me, the best way to know if news is accurate is if you do your own research on information and compare it to other work to find the best possible conclusion.
